What the heck is an "Integer" anyway???
Call off the dogs, an integer is nothing to get worked up over...it's just a fancy name for a number that comes with it's own + or - sign attached. For example (+1) or (-2) are integers. We often express them inside parentheses to keep from making mistakes when we write them down as expressions.
For instance, you might see:
(+2) + (-3) = (-1)
or (-2) + (-5) = (-7)
or (-6) - (-4) = (-2)
As you can see, there are a number of + and - signs around, so the brackets help keep things straight.
Don't worry if you don't understand how we got to those answers. There are some very simple rules you need to remember when performing operations (addition/subtraction and multiplication/division) with integers. We'll be working through all of those in class. It will make sense soon enough.
